Virginia James doesn’t try to fit into a single genre. Throughout Time and Time Again’s ten tracks, they seamlessly skirt between singer-songwriter, folk, blues, contemporary, and even flashes of some bossa nova. This album is a testament to Alicia and Chris Farias’ unflappable musical chemistry, but the real strength lies in its instrumental breaks, with the shining star being Alicia’s lush violin work.
The vocal play between Alicia and Chris provides another layer of depth. The pair trade lead vocals throughout the album, with Alicia showcasing her expansive range while Chris offers a warmer, more understated but authentic delivery. Their harmonies consistently elevate the material, creating some of the album’s most memorable moments.
The album’s opening title track immediately establishes those strengths, building from an a cappella introduction into an arrangement that highlights both Alicia’s lead vocal and Chris’ tasteful guitar work. Later, “Coming Back to You” broadens the band’s sonic palette with blues and soul influences, while the church-choir chorus allows Alicia’s powerful upper register to take center stage.
Several tracks rise above the rest. “The Keeper” is arguably the album’s most complete song, pairing graceful violin and guitar work with a lighthouse metaphor that feels comforting and universal. Likewise, “7:30 Run” stands out thanks to the record’s strongest melody, an engaging folk-inspired arrangement, and a fun fake ending that gives the song a welcome sense of playfulness. Chris, in particular, shines here, delivering his finest vocal performance on the album.
Elsewhere, Virginia James isn’t afraid to explore different musical landscapes. “Thoughts of You” introduces an unexpected bossa nova rhythm, creating the hazy atmosphere of a rainy afternoon spent lost in longing, while “I Don’t Mind” leans into a roots-rock sound that recalls the earnest storytelling of ’90s Americana (think: Counting Crows). Even when the band shifts stylistically, its identity remains anchored by expressive harmonies and thoughtful musicianship. Closing track “Escape Into You” offers the record’s most intimate performance, with Chris’ gentle vocal complemented by Alicia’s expressive violin.
Ultimately, Time and Time Again is a showcase for two accomplished musicians who clearly trust one another. It’s a thoughtful collection that highlights the duo’s versatility while reaffirming that a genuine musical partnership remains one of the most compelling instruments of all.
