Music Discovery – De La Motte Strings

December 2012

We have a new music discovery for you, dear Troubadour readers! We found them while strolling along at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market a couple weeks ago, and we immediately fell in love!

Introducing De La Motte Strings! Their members include siblings Josiah (age 10, violin), Pearl (age 8, violin), Elijah (age 6, violin), Naomi (age 4, violin), and their mother Amber (viola).

We caught up with Amber and she told us more about her talented family band came together:
“The kids started playing together for special events at church, then we started playing for weddings and graduations as well.  We started playing around town and at local libraries upon the recommendation of a friend of ours who plays for the San Diego Symphony.  The kids wanted to go to Strings by the Sea Music Camp, but it was too expensive. When I told this to our friend she suggested we get some songs together and play some music around town.  We earned enough to help us pay our way to Strings Camp and we had a lot of fun doing it.”

So besides mesmerizing crowds with their amazing talent (not to mention adorable stage presence), what else do the De La Motte siblings do?
“The kids all love reading and writing stories.  They even compose music for their stories. Recently Elijah wrote a story about a little prince.  Josiah wrote some music for it and Pearl and Naomi drew some pictures.  They do a lot of things together because we do home school. Home school gives us more time for things like music, but it also allows the kids to learn from each other and put their heads together for group projects.”

Where can our readers catch De La Motte Strings play next?
“We are playing at the Organ Pavilion for Christmas on the Prado during Lighthouse Baptist Church’s Cantata presentation of “Creating Christmas.” We also play at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market from 1-2 on the 2nd and 4th Sunday.”
