The internet is an amazing thing, isn’t it? The whole world is at your fingertips! The good, the bad, the Miley. It’s all there, and you are the captain of the ship, navigating your way through viral videos and Facebook timelines and Ted Talks and spam and – my favorite – new music!
Let me tell you how yesterday morning went. I got to work, turned on my computer and started checking emails. Every January I try to make myself unsubscribe from most of non-applicable-to-me-e-newsletters I receive in my inbox, so I was paying extra special attention to which email made the cut. I noticed a newsletter from Soda Bar, decided it passed the test and starting reading their upcoming show calendar just for funsies. I noticed a band I’d never heard of called Mother Falcon was booked for a Tuesday night residency there. My brain told my fingers ‘I must know more,’ and my fingers got-to-Googling. A few seconds later I had learned that Mother Falcon is a 20+ person group of classically trained musicians from Austin that perform modern compositions that bridge the gap between orchestra and band. We’re talking clarinet, trumpet, accordion, the whole string family, and more.
Next thing you know I’m watching a Tiny Desk Concert (and I love me some TDCs), and now I’m a fan for life. Through more searching, I also learned that the band is committed to raising awareness for the importance of music education. Thank you, Internet! That really made up for the time you made me waste an hour trying to figure out what really was the best recipe for mashed potatoes.
Now I’m recruiting you. Click play. Become a fan! And come to the Soda Bar any Tuesday this February to watch it all live.
