James King is coming to San Diego, courtesy of the San Diego Bluegrass Society, for a concert on Sunday, March 25, at the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach, 4747 Soledad Mountain Rd. If you like your bluegrass traditional and hard driving, you won’t want to miss this one.
James King and his band are established recording artists, have toured nationally and internationally, and are considered among the “best of the best” of traditional bluegrass bands. James King sings from the heart and will touch you emotionally with his powerful vocals. The evening starts at 7pm with a 30-minute opening set by local band Old Town Road. Temecula Bluegrass Festival March 16-18. The annual Temecula Bluegrass Festival will be held in old town Temecula over the weekend of March 16-18. Julian Family Fiddle Camp April 11-15. This is the second year for the Julian Family Fiddle Camp tat the beautiful Camp Cedar Glen in Julian. There is a stellar lineup of instructors including Calvin Volrath of Canada and Jane Frey of the San Diego symphony on fiddle, Evan Marshall on mandolin, and national flat-pick champion Tyler Grant and Texas Swing back up pro Jonathon Trawick on guitar. Bluegrass Campout April 20-22. The annual spring bluegrass campout is scheduled for April 20-22 at the KOA campground in Chula Vista just off the 805. There are full hook ups for RVs, lots of grass and tree shaded campsites, a pool, cabins, and other amenities, making this close-in site an easy and fun destination. You can expect there to be lots of pickers and grinners in attendance, with jamming into all hours, likely a band scramble, a pot luck on Saturday night, and lots of fun for all ages, pickers, and non-pickers alike. Bluegrass Day at the Fair June 30. Saturday June 30 has been set as Bluegrass Day at the Fair for 2012 at the beautiful Paddock Stage at the Del Mar fairgrounds. Entertainment and activity details will be fleshed out later, but you can expect the bluegrass festivities to extend from noon until about 8pm and to include the traditional band scramble, some kind of kids’ program, and some great bands.
