Listen Local by Cathryn Beeks

April 2023

Once upon a time I moved to San Diego. It was November of 1999 and I fell in love with this city’s music and its makers. Inspired by all the incredible talent, I began hosting songwriter showcases, camping and music festivals, and co-hosting a podcast all in an effort to share the music being made here. I called my brand Listen Local and in October of 2003, Hotrod Harris gave me the money to buy my domain name and start a website. I am beyond grateful for all of the music, adventures and fun I’ve experienced since then and I’m proud to be celebrating 20 years of Listen Local this October. Please save the date, October 7th, 2023 for the return of Band Camp, details to be announced in the coming months. Thank you to everyone who has ever played or attended a Listen Local event and to those who continue to support Listen Local via Patron.com/listenlocalradio and HUGE LOVE to Liz Abbott for giving me this column each month! I look forward to sharing the monthly Listen Local Show podcast as well as episodes of our musical talk show, Listen Local Lounge at Satellite each month. Thanks for reading and I hope to see you at a show! xo Cathryn

Listen Local Lounge at Satellite — A Musical Talk Show

During the shutdown, Jeff Berkley and I coproduced a musical talk show featuring 2 guests each episode. We called it Listen Local Lounge at Satellite and we invited musical guests to visit, chat, play songs, and chat some more in Jeff’s amazing studio digs. There are over a dozen episodes and I’ll be sharing them here with you each month. This first one features legends Jerry Raney and Joey Harris. You can listen to that episode here, and if you’d like to watch videos of their performances you can find them here. We’ll be starting a new season of this series, stay tuned!

Put on your headphones and join Calamity on another adventure! This Radio Play uses songs by the SDMA nominated all female folk rock ensemble CALAMITY to string together stories that will have you laughing, crying and looking forward to more! Don’t miss Calamity at The Ramona Main Stage on April 20th and at the SDMA after party on April 25th!

Thus concludes my first column. I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months. In the meantime, stay safe and have fun and I’ll see you at a show. Oh! You can keep up with me at Patreon.com/ListenLocalRadio for $2 a month you’ll help Listen Local continue to rock the free world for another 20 years. Thank you. xo
